Spirit of Ballet
November 9-10, 2024
NYB’s 2024 Fall Series, Spirit of Ballet will take place at the J. Everett Collins Center for the Performing Arts in Andover, MA. The program explores classical and contemporary ballets through the spirit realm. Opening the program is When We Gathered Beneath the Sky, by NYB’s resident choregrapher, Joseph Jefferies. His neo-classical ballet that debuted at the Chautauqua Institution in NY (2021) is set to music by Aaron Copland and imagined in an earthly and sacred realm. Second on the program is The Extremity of Being, created by NSB’s resident contemporary choregrapher, Jeremy Ruth Howes. Her new work will debut with the entire company bringing the ballet to life on stage with inspiration from the realm of the mind. The program will conclude with the classic, Giselle (Act II). The original choreography was by Jean Coralli, Jules Perrot, and Marius Petipa, and will be coached by NYB’s artistic director, Denise Cecere. The classic ballet, Giselle, is a rite of passage for every artist to dance and the iconic and romantic Act II is considered a masterwork in the classical ballet performance canon. Set in a ghostly realm, the ballet debuted in 1841 in Paris and has lasted the test of time.
